The Hack
Almost as good as duct tape...
Beyond the Bath
Though it can clean us
both front and back
It’s also worth noting its value for other practical hacks
Of course you’ve been using it to scrub your floors
But did you know
It could also
unstick that stuck drawer?
Bathroom mirror fogging it can prevent
and to clothes stored in drawers
it lends a nice scent
Get that zipper to zip up again
with the speed of a Yankee clipper
Put it in your garden and
pests stay away
so you actually get to eat
your own lettuce for more than
one summer’s day
If you dig the work
but don’t like the dirt
Before gardening
Grope the soap
so you leave little trails
and you won’t fail
to keep clean those
long gorgeous nails
Rid yourself of those
just-got-them-to-sleep cringes
over all your little ones’ doors’
squeaky hinges
In addition to actually first
reading the directions
lubricating screws
will make that Ikea assembly
easier for you to do
Always for you,
M.A. Hastings
Poetry Backstories
It had always happened. Whenever Connie Schultz, of Hopefully Yours, published on Substack, the flow of notifications of new followers and subscribers to my Substack started. Yay for the additional readers! But did I dare to hope that the sign-ups meant that Connie was back on this very platform writing again?
I checked. Like right that minute. Sure enough, there in my inbox was Connie’s newsletter titled “Let’s Go Find the Joy”. Great writing and a good reminder to do just that. Seek out. Find the joy in unexpected moments. In unexpected places.
So today is this poem on the lighter side, originally written for the prompt “soap” for Verse Reps on March 3, 2026. If you have enjoyed taking a break from the bleakness of the world by reading it today, you can become a paid subscriber or make a one-time donation at Buy Me a Coffee.
Either way would be most appreciated. In doing so, you will also be supporting my efforts to provide my Substack writing in the real voice of Glad Klassen to those persons who are blind or visually impaired.
