Who Am I?
“Your word Is your seal”
used to be the only deal
The one condition in
which there was permission
To nullify or change what you
agreed to
by words said
Was by you being dead
Although there have always been
con men and crooks
That the current White House
dweller
is a 34-time convicted feller
is one for the Guinness Records Book
Whether I voted for him or not
doesn’t change my personal responsibility
To honor with all that I’ve got
every word that comes from me
For each of our acts
that doesn’t match
What we say we believe
Shouts to all the world who we
really be
Always for you,
M.A. Hastings
Poetry Backstories
I was in quite the writing funk when I got this Substack Direct Message from Greg at Verse Reps:
“A small group of us started writing a short poem every day to a one-word prompt. We publish all of them together in a single post each day. When I searched poetry, surprise, yours was the first name to come up! If you'd consider writing poetry with us tomorrow, the word for 5/16 is “stride”. I post a word in the subscriber chat each day and people either reply or DM or email their poem for inclusion. I'm really interested in adding some new voices, so I wanted to extend the invitation!”
It took me several days to respond for many reasons, all “true”, but not the “Big T Truth”. The Big T Truth about my delay was my doubting my ability to write a poem about a subject not of my choosing every. day. Greg’s “We don’t wait for inspiration. We show up.”, description of the Verse Reps project became my Goldilocks’ hour; just the right amount of nudging at just the right time.
Once I decided to start showing up, I actually managed to produce a decent poem every day. I wrote “Who Am I?” for the word prompt “seal”. From now until August, I’ll be posting a poem, along with the word prompt I was given here. I hope that the idea of “showing up” to write will encourage some of you to join the Verse Reps crew in August, as Greg restarts the daily send-out of the one word prompt.
Always for you,
M.A. Hastings
So glad you said yes! It’s a delight to write with you.
