What Matters
There was a time
that used to be
when I thought Jesus
was a good holy man-
just not for me
I had a career
that was the dream
of my life
I was mom to Katie
and to Lance a good wife.
I had not a. clue
I was without one plea
until one of God’s peeps
befriended me
She never
at me
even once
preached
But with the grace of her life
she did me well teach
About God’s
merciful
gracious
loving ways
that could fill
my heart for the
rest of my days
But my ego resisted
I wanted to fight
Until Jesus
showed up
in the middle
of the night
Instead of a citing
of all of my wrongs
He caressed my heart
with a wondrous song
No longer
did I
push Him away
What I wanted then
was for Him
to stay
It’s been 39 years
And the joy’s
had not end
as He weeds
my heart’s garden
and walks
with me
as friend
Sadly, I cannot say there’s been
such a positive end
For the friendship that first
led me
to Him
In spite of our being opposite
in so many ways
Our spirits seemed
they’d be bound by
Him
together
for all of our days
In 30+ years, we’d never
talked politics
Was it because the way of Jesus’s walk
superseded whatever
was the hour’s political talk?
Was it that Jesus’s ways of justice and mercy-filled livin’
was so front and center that it was like breathing-
An unnoticed,
taken-for-granted-given?
But how did she turn a
MAGA fan and I did not
When it’s the same Jesus
we both proclaim that we’ve got?
These questions could undoubtedly make
for more clickbait debate
But would that not
continue
to fuel the already too cruel
fear-mongering, divisions
and hate?
Regardless of whether survives
beyond 2024 our democracy
No one else
But me
Will stand before The Creator
One day
And hear
“Let me see…
In your life of ease
Of the freedom to choose
Your own friends
Your own destiny
Your legacy
What did you say and do…
To continue to
love your friends and your neighbors
with the yard signs of the candidates you did not favor
as though they were you?”
Always for you,
M.A. Hastings

It's hard not to contest the ideas of close friends. I have a couple of MAGA friends (& family members) who are my polar opposites politically! I avoid talking politics around them.
