Lent My Way
Lent My Way
Today is the second day
of what Western Christianity has come to call Lent
And although I don’t believe in
Original sin
Or that my heart beats black within
And towards hell always bent
There are plenty of things for which I need to repent
Am I guilty of gazes haughty
Or self-righteousness or ways self-sufficient?
What does my heart most treasure?
Fame or health or wealth
without measure?
Do I only do the convenient
Or just things for pleasure?
Or am I fasting for eyes of compassion to finally see
Those central to Christ’s passion
But who don’t always look or
act like me?
So what kind of person
in this Lenten season am I
asking God to help me be?
One thirsty
for righteousness
Hungry
for justice
The lover of mercy
A. Do-Gooder to all I meet
Praying with my feet
Always for you,
M.A. Hastings
