Armchair Treasures
The Oyster’s Pearl
I had the good fortune of
growing up poor
in a family where hard work and
education was thought to
unlock the door
of
Opportunity
A chance to see
the
world as something more
than Pistol’s oyster
to be opened with a sword.*
I could
with books
have a cornucopia of experiences
from an armchair
Going to different places
without going anywhere
I’ve amassed a fortune
in learning from
and caring for
people who look and act
like me not
I’ve been gifted
with
wisdom’s pearls
And nary an oyster
or a sword
have I got.
* Reference to the often misquoted line from Shakespeare’s The Merry Wives of Windsor, “Why then the world is mine oyster, Which I with sword will open.” II.ii.2-5
“The Oyster’s Pearl” was written for the word prompt “fortune” for the Verse Reps writing challenge.
Always for you,
